7/13/16 Oops!

International Falls, MN claims to be the coldest spot in the lower forty-eight. Why is this penguin in Cutbank, MT lying to us?

Now for the back story. We drew back the drapes today and were blinded by the first sun we've seen in days! The forecast looked great and we were bound for Glacier. Rain suits rolled tight in the bottom of our saddle bags, we leaned out onto route 2 into a magnificent Montana sky.

Threading the eye of the horizon, Rascal took her place in the sun and basked in it. So smug in our ability to conquer nature, we shrugged off any hint of blooming storm clouds that developed around us. This couldn't happen again - it wasn't even on the radar.

Just after Shelby, a mere 80 miles from our start, we succumbed, dug out our rain suits and headed into the dark. With each turn of the road, a clear path through curtains of distant rain gave us hope. But the curtains always closed.

A sheltered picnic spot in Cutbank gave us pause to rethink our day. Glacier was still miles away and the way was blocked by dozens of storms. It was time to honker down . There was only one show in town, The Glacier Gateway Inn, so we booked a room under the shadow of a talking penguin that is actually featured in Roadside America. As far as being the coldest spot in America, I think he talks out of both sides of his mouth.

This small town, created by the Transcontinental Railroad is our home for the night. We didn't get far today, but we didn't get too wet and and we did get to meet an amazing penguin. Experience on the road can be measured in many different ways - miles, weather, scenery, twisting climbs into mountains and quirky encounters on rainy days. They all count as part of the ongoing saga of Jules and Betsy on the road, an epic whose eclectic patina is improved daily.

Rocks! We are getting closer to the mountains!

Silos into the horizon

Nope!

We donated in several ways!

We were golden

Then this happened

Choppers, Montana style

  1. I feel like when they have to advertise clean rooms as a bonus that's not a good sign! You are truly pioneers! :p
